Building every number in between

Past twenty, Armenian stacks the ten and the ones digit into a single word — no extra connector, no hyphen. Twenty-five is քսանհինգ (k'san-hing), literally "twenty-five" run together. Once you know the ten words above and the digits 1–9, you can build every number up to 99 without learning anything new.

  • 21քսանմեկk'san-mek
  • 25քսանհինգk'san-hing
  • 42քառասուներկուk'arasun-yerku
  • 67վաթսունյոթvat'sun-yot'
  • 99իննսունինըinnsun-inə

Ordinal numbers (first, second, third…)

Ordinals are formed from the cardinal number, mostly with the ending -երորդ (-erord). The first three are irregular and worth memorising as-is; everything from fourth onward follows the pattern.

  • 1stառաջինa-ra-jin
  • 2ndերկրորդyerk-rord
  • 3rdերրորդyer-rord
  • 4thչորրորդchor-rord
  • 5thհինգերորդhing-e-rord
  • 10thտասներորդtasn-e-rord

Common questions

Are Armenian numbers hard to learn?

They're one of the easier parts of the language. The digits 1–10 are short, the teens are transparent compounds of "ten" plus the digit, and everything above twenty follows one predictable stacking rule. Most learners are comfortable counting to 100 within a few days.

Does Armenian use the same digits as English?

Yes — modern Armenian writes numerals with the same 0–9 Arabic digits you already use, so prices, phone numbers, and dates are readable straight away. There is also a historical Armenian numeral system that uses letters of the alphabet, but you'll only meet it in old manuscripts and on monuments, not in everyday life.

Are these numbers Eastern or Western Armenian?

The words on this page are Standard Eastern Armenian, the form spoken in Armenia today. Western Armenian uses the same number words, but pronounces several consonants differently — for example the initial sounds shift, so the same spelling is voiced differently. See our Western vs Eastern Armenian comparison for the full picture.

How do I say a year or a phone number in Armenian?

Years are read as a full number (հազար ինը հարյուր… for 19xx), while phone numbers are usually read digit by digit, exactly as in English. Both only require the 0–100 vocabulary on this page plus հազար (ha-zar, thousand).
